NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale coed and women's sailing teams had a strong weekend of regattas to close out the fall season.
At MIT, the coed team competed in the 84th Professor Erwin Schell Trophy. On Saturday, the wind was shifty out of the northeast, ranging from 2 to 10 knots. Despite multiple races being abandoned due to the wind dying, eight races in each division were completed. Sunday brought similarly shifty conditions, with the wind shifting to the northwest. Several races were again abandoned because of light wind. After battling for first place with Harvard on Sunday, the Bulldogs finished second by just one point. Skipper Morgan Pinckney with crew Annabel Woodworth won A division, and skipper Dorothy Mendelblatt with crew Julia Miller placed second in B division. Fourteen races were completed in each division over the weekend.
The women's team also sailed on the Charles River this weekend for the Victorian Urn Trophy. Conditions were very similar to what the coed team experienced at MIT, with a shifty, light breeze throughout. Skipper Carly Kieding with crew Sarah Moeder placed ninth in A division, and skipper Elle Sykes with crew Ella Benedetto placed third in B division. Overall, the team finished fourth, with each division completing twelve races.
This weekend marked the end of the fleet racing doublehanded season. From November 8–9, junior Mathias Reimer will compete in the Open Singlehanded Nationals, and sophomore Audrey Foley will compete in the Women's Singlehanded Nationals. Both regattas will be held at Old Dominion University. Doublehanded racing will resume in the spring.
