No. 2 Bulldogs Sail for Berth in Match Race National Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – This weekend, the Yale coed sailing team will compete in the New England Sloop Championship in Newport, R.I., as well as the Captain Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth and the Providence College Invite in Providence, R.I.  A finish in the top two at the Sloop Championship will qualify them for the national championship, which will be held in Charleston, S.C., at the end of November.

In Newport, the Bulldogs will be Match Racing in Ynglings. Junior Ian Barrows will take the helm, while senior Marly Isler and freshman Nick Hernandez will crew. Barrows and Isler together qualified for the nationals last year in an incredible comeback on the second day of the qualifier.

Isler has been a valuable asset to the match race team in her time at Yale. She has been part of the teams that have qualified for Match Race Nationals three years in a row and is hoping to do the same this time around with the help of Barrows and Hernandez.

Sailing at Dartmouth at the Captain Hurst will be juniors Mitchell Kiss and Clara Robertson in A division, sophomore Malcolm Lamphere and junior Chandler Gregoire in B division and freshman Nic Baird and senior Charlotte Belling in C division. Sophomore Christopher Champa will also be travelling to Dartmouth as a heavy-air crew.

The Captain Hurst is a three-division event, so all divisions will be rotating in and out of Dartmouth's FJs and Z420s throughout the weekend.

Finally, the Bulldogs will be sending a team to the Providence College Invite. This team will consist of skippers senior Eric Anderson and sophomore Patrick Buehler with crews juniors Amelia Dobronyi and Elizabeth Tokarz and freshman Ayla Besemer.

Racing begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Follow results at http://scores.collegesailing.org.
