No. 1 Bulldogs Place Second at Hoyt

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 1 Bulldogs placed second at the Hoyt Trophy at Brown, with only five races completed per division due to light winds on Saturday. They also finished 10th at the Oberg, which was also limited by light breeze, and third at the Southern Series 7 at Roger Williams University.

Only two races were completed on Saturday at Brown, at which point the wind died and racing was called off. Juniors Ian Barrows and Amelia Dobronyi won both A division races on Saturday.

On Sunday, juniors Mitchell Kiss and Clara Robertson stepped in for Barrows and Dobronyi. Their scores combined resulted in a second-place A division finish.

B division didn't sail their first race until Sunday morning in a 6-10 knot southwesterly that clocked west throughout the day and decreased in velocity. Freshman Nic Baird with senior Charlotte Belling sailed consistently, earning a strong second-place finish.

At MIT, the Bulldogs placed 10th. The race committee was not able to get any races off on Saturday, as wind speeds fell below the three-knot wind speed minimum.

Sunday's conditions proved challenging: a five-knot southwest breeze filled in the morning that fluctuated in velocity throughout the day, reaching 15 knots at its highest point.

Sophomore Malcolm Lamphere and junior Amelia Dobronyi placed seventh in A division, 10 points out of third.

Freshmen Nick Hernandez and Kira Woods placed fifth in B, but would have placed third if not for an unfortunate disqualification in the last race.

Junior Charles Skoda sailed his first event on the Charles River with sophomore crew Caroline Colwell. They placed 14th in C division.

The Southern Series 7 also saw light winds on Saturday, but just enough to hold four races. Since only nine teams competed, both A and B division sailed on the same course and were scored as one fleet.

Sophomore skipper Claire Huebner with freshman crew Claire Rossi de Leon placed third overall, while Skoda and freshman Ayla Besemer placed 12th. Their combined results helped the Bulldogs to a third-place finish.

Next weekend, the Bulldogs will return to the Charles River to compete in the Erwin Schell Trophy at MIT, which acts as the qualifier for the Atlantic Coast Championships.
