NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 11 Yale University men's lacrosse team scored the first 10 goals of the game in its 13-3 win versus Sacred Heart.
Conrad Oberbeck (Greenwich, Conn.) and Jeff Cimbalista (New Hope, Pa.) paced the Elis (7-2, 1-2 Ivy) with four points each.
Yale went on the attack early and often on the visiting Pioneers (4-4, 1-1 NEC), holding a 4-0 lead after the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on their first possession of the non-conference matchup when Cimbalista leaped and fired an Oberbeck pass 4:43 in.
Oberbeck gave the Elis a 2-0 midway through the opening period. It was the 119th career goal for the attackman.
Some quick passing by the Bulldogs gave the hosts a 3-0 lead at the 10:17 mark. Senior Harry Kucharczyk (Manhasset, N.Y) led the fast break over the midfield, drawing the Pioneers' defense. The Yale captain quickly passed to Cimbalista, who dished to a cutting Ben Reeves (Macedon, N.Y.) for the doorstep tally.
Oberbeck closed the quarter with an unassisted goal with seven seconds left. It was the eighth three-point game of the spring for the senior, the seventh leading scorer in program history with 158 points.
The Bulldogs continued their run in the second quarter, scoring five more times.
Eric Scott (Basking Ridge, N.J.) rocketed a Colin Flaherty (Eastport, N.Y.) feed into the upper corner 78 seconds into the frame.
The Elis got their sixth goal with 11:17 remaining in the first half. A Sean Shakespeare (Walpole, Mass.) bouncer beat Pioneers' goalie Jon Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Shane Thornton (Garden City, N.Y.) assisted on the senior's third goal of the spring.
Scott recorded his second of the night at the 6:14 mark. Flaherty was credited with the helper.
Thornton got his third goal of the year with 7:09 left in the second quarter. Jason Alessi (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) assisted on the senior's bounce shot.
At the 9:45 mark, Cimbalista sent home an Oberbeck pass to give Yale a 9-0 halftime lead.
The hosts hit double digits for the fifth time this season 4:21 into the third quarter on a Shakespeare trickler. Fellow senior Thornton assisted on the goal.
Graham Welter (Avon, Conn.) scored his first career goal with 9:27 left in the third to Sacred Heart get on the board.
Cimbalista completed the hat trick at the 8:55 mark. Reeves assisted on the sophomore's 16th tally of the spring.
Alessi opened the final quarter scoring 57 seconds in. The freshman's fourth goal of the season was unassisted.
Bailey Walsh (Derry, N.H.) scored the Pioneers' second goal one-timing a Cole Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) feed past Yale goalie Eric Natale (Westminster, Md.) at the 3:13 mark. It was the first career points for each of the Sacred Heart rookies.
With 10:27 left, JW McGovern (San Francisco, Calif.) scored unassisted to give Yale a 13-2 lead.
Matt Posch (Brookhaven, N.Y.) beat the Bulldogs' third string goalie Dylan Meyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) with 2:39 left for the final margin.
Natale (7-2) made six saves to pick up the victory.
The Bulldogs return to Ivy League play when they host Dartmouth on April 4. The opening face-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
