Bulldogs Defend Hatch Brown Trophy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second time in a row, the Bulldogs won the Hatch Brown Trophy held at MIT. They also placed 11th and 8th at the Nevins Trophy and Central Series, respectively, with strong divisional performances by underclassmen.

The winning team consisted of five juniors and one sophomore. They faced some of the most unstable conditions produced by the Charles River. On Saturday, the breeze started out in a southwest direction, eventually shifting nearly 180 degrees to the east-southeast. Sunday was more up and down in terms of pressure differences and shifts, with a northerly coming off of the land.

Juniors Ian Barrows and Natalya Doris placed fourth in A division, just two points behind the third-place boat.

Juniors Mitchell Kiss and Clara Robertson won B division with a mere 57 points over the 14 races that took place this weekend, averaging at 4 points per race.

Sophomore Malcolm Lamphere and junior Chandler Gregoire placed first in an extremely close C division. They earned 84 points, winning the tiebreaker with the second-place boat, and were three points ahead of the fifth-place boat.

At the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y., freshmen Nic Baird and Nick Hernandez had their college fleet racing debut. They performed exceptionally this weekend, placing higher than many experienced upperclassmen.

Baird, with crews junior Amelia Dobronyi and sophomore Claire Huebner, placed fourth in A division, just two points out of second. Hernandez sailed with senior crew Emily Johnson. They placed second in B.

The Nevins was a three-division event, so sophomore Christopher Champa sailed a Laser in C division. He had a tough weekend, as he only had a few days of experience in the Laser prior to the event. Overall, the team placed 11th.

On the Boston Harbor the Bulldogs placed eighth at the Central Series. Sophomore skipper KB Knapp with sophomore crew Caroline Colwell and freshman crew Claire Rossi de Leon earned fourth in A division, while junior skipper Charles Skoda with freshman crews Ayla Besemer and Rossi de Leon were 13th in B division.
