ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Yale women's sailing team took home gold at the Navy Women's Interconference Regatta this weekend.
Skippers junior Casey Klingler and freshman Louisa Nordstrom competed with crews senior captain Natalya Doris, senior Isabelle Rossi de Leon, and junior Claire Huebner. Both A and B division came out on top. In C division, freshman Chrissie Klingler finished an impressive sixth despite having never sailed a Laser Radial before.
Saturday was light and rainy. Nordstrom and Rossi de Leon had a particularly strong day with no finish out of the top four in B division. Nordstrom credits their excellent starting and boat handling.
On Sunday, Hurricane Matthew brought extremely windy conditions, so both A and B division sailed Z420s. In A division, Casey Klingler and Huebner focused on hiking as hard as possible right after the start to get punched out and have more options later on. Nordstrom and Doris mastered adjusting to big fluctuations in wind velocity across the course. Chrissie Klingler's starts in C division were a highlight of the day; she frequently rolled competitors.
Next weekend, the same group will compete at the Yale Women's Interconference at the McNay Family Sailing Center.
