Lawson has Strong Day at Plate in Losing Effort

Annapolis, Maryland - Yale got a taste of some of its promising young pitching talent on Saturday, but the Bulldogs couldn't manufacture enough offense to pick up their first win of the season.

Freshmen pitchers Scott Politz and Sam Boies were the silver lining in a 3-2 loss to Navy in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Max Bishop Stadium. Yale (0-6) fell 8-2 in the opener of the twinbill.

The right-handed Politz (0-2) scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs over seven innings, while striking out eight. He also didn't walk a batter. Then in the eighth, Boies came in for Tyler Duncan and got Yale out of a bases loaded jam by striking out the final two batters of the frame.

"Scott Politz was very good," Yale head coach John Stuper said. "Sam Boies got us out of a mess in the eighth. He's done a really good job out of the bullpen so far."

The Bulldogs had their chances to produce some runs early on, as their first three batters reached safely to load bases. But Navy managed to keep Yale off the scoreboard.

Yale took a 1-0 lead in the second. Brent Lawson led off the inning with a triple and later scored on Nate Adams sacrifice fly. Tom Ruddy doubled in the sixth and Richard Slenker followed with a double of his own, plating Ruddy for the Bulldogs' second run.

In the first game, a four-run fifth frame keyed the victory for the Midshipmen. Chasen Ford (0-1) went the distance and picked up the loss for the Bulldogs.

Yale tied the game at 2 in the fourth. Brett Lawson kicked off his strong day at the dish, driving in Nate Adams with a double down the left field line. Lawson later scored on an error. Chris Moates, Alex Boos and Tom O'Neill all had hits for the Bulldogs.

"We need to start having tougher at-bats," Stuper said. "And we need to quit hitting the ball in the air so much."

The Bulldogs will look to bounce back against Navy on Sunday. The two teams square at noon for another doubleheader at Max Bishop Stadium.

Mason Kukowski (0-2) will take the hill in the first game for Yale.
