Box Score 2 Do Tallies Two Hits In Opener
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Yale nearly pulled off a pair of big comebacks but came up just short in dropping a doubleheader at Central Connecticut. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the seventh inning before falling 7-4 in the opener and then scored three times in the sixth inning of the nightcap but lost 6-4.
Allison Skinner had two hits and knocked in two runs in the opener, and Carlin Hagmaier and Camille Weisenbach each had two hits in the second game.
Trailing 7-1 entering the final frame of the first game, the Bulldogs rallied and got the tying run to the plate. Rachel Paris got it started by drawing a walk and Weisenbach followed with a double. Brittany Labbadia's two-run single cut the deficit to 7-3, and Skinner pulled the Bulldogs within three with an RBI single.
A walk to Shelby Kennedy brought the tying run to the plate, but CCSU pitcher Emily Sargent retired the next hitter to end the game.
Skinner's RBI single in the first inning gave Yale a 1-0 lead, but the Blue Devils answered with two runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
In the second game, Central Connecticut had a 6-1 lead heading to the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs again refused to quit. Yale scored three times with all of the runs coming with two outs. Paris was hit by a pitch to get things started. She scored on Hagmaier's double to right-center. Weisenbach followed with an RBI single, and Madison Sack walked. Sydney Ginsberg's single scored Weisenbach, but the rally ended when the next hitter was retired.
Central Connecticut (8-13-1) had scored twice in the first inning to seize control.
Yale's first run of the game came in the fifth when Sack's sacrifice fly scored Hagmaier.
The Bulldogs play their home opener on Saturday, hosting a doubleheader with Wagner. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 1 p.m.
