Box Score 2 Hagmaier's Winning Hit Earns Yale A Split
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Three members of Yale's freshman class made the most of their first game action at Dewitt Family Field. The trio of Shelby Kennedy, Terra Jerpbak and Carlin Hagmaier contributed in a number of ways - at the plate, in the circle and in the field defensively. It was Hagmaier, though, who turned out to be the hero. Her single scored Laina Do with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bulldogs earned a split of a doubleheader with a 1-0 victory over Wagner.
The Seahawks (9-11) won the first game 5-1.
Kennedy made her mark in the field with a number of terrific catches in the outfield, none more important than a sliding grab in the eighth inning of the second game that saved two runs.
Jerpbak had a big day at the plate and in the circle. She managed three hits in the two games and was the winning pitcher in the second game, tossing a shutout with a career-high eight strikeouts. She also pitched 2.1 innings of relief in the first game and struck out a pair.
In addition to the game-winning hit, one of four for her on the day, Hagmaier also played a strong first base, scooping a couple of throws out of the dirt.
Do got the winning rally started in the ninth inning of the second game with an infield single. Jerpbak followed with an infield single, setting the stage for Hagmaier, who lined a pitch into left-center. Do slid home just ahead of the throw, setting off a celebration for the Bulldogs in their first home date of the season.
Camille Weisenbach also had two hits for the Bulldogs (5-15).
Jerpbak was outstanding in the circle, limiting Wagner to six hits.
Yale managed 11 hits in the first game but left 13 runners on base.
Early on, the game was a pitcher's duel between Lindsay Efflandt and Wagner's Morgan Brown.
After three scoreless innings, the Bulldogs finally broke through in the fourth when Hagmaier tripled and scored on Weisenbach's single to centerfield.
Wagner, though, scored three times in the fifth and added two more in the sixth.
Efflandt pitched well for Yale. She did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings.
Allison Skinner and Sydney Ginsberg were among the Bulldogs with hits.
Yale is back in action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Fairfield. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 2 p.m.
