No. 2 Bulldogs Win Thompson Trophy

NEW LONDON, Conn. – After a weekend of sailing in shifty wind conditions, the Yale coed sailing team took home the Thompson Trophy for the second year in a row and placed third at the Ivy Championship for the Owen, Mosbacher and Knapp trophies, ahead of all other Ivy schools at the event.

Conditions were unpredictable and tricky at both venues, which led to a lot of up-and-down scores for many teams.

In New London, at the Thompson Trophy, a three-division regatta, Yale showed their mastery of shifty conditions and maintained a dominating lead for the majority of the weekend. The Bulldogs finished 43 points ahead of the No. 12 Roger Williams Hawks, who placed second, and 64 ahead of the No. 13 Harvard Crimson, who placed third.

Junior captain Mitchell Kiss with crews senior Charlotte Belling and junior Clara Robertson placed fifth in a competitive A division, just five points out of third place and 15 out of first.

Freshman skipper Nic Baird with crews Belling, junior Isabelle Rossi de Leon and sophomore Christopher Champa won B division by a significant margin, with 15 points between them and the second-place boat and 18 between them and the third-place boat.

In C division, freshman skipper Nick Hernandez with crews Champa and sophomore Caroline Colwell placed third. Out of 16 races, they won three and placed outside of the top 10 just three times.

In Ithaca, N.Y., the Bulldogs secured a solid third-place finish. In A division, sophomore skipper Malcolm Lamphere with junior crew Chandler Gregoire placed ninth.

The duo of sophomore Casey Klingler and senior Emily Johnson won B division by sailing an extremely consistent regatta. They placed out of the top five just once and averaged 4.3 points per race.

The New England fleet racing national qualifier is in just two weeks, so the Bulldogs will spend much of their practice time sharpening up their fleet racing tactics and boathandling.
