No. 2 Bulldogs Defend Marchiando Trophy

BOSTON – This weekend, the Yale coed sailing team won the 2016 Lynne Marchiando Regatta with a perfect 13-0 record, placed fourth at the Camel Team Race and placed ninth at the Central Series 3 Fleet Race. This is the third time in four years that the Bulldogs have taken home the Marchiando Trophy, a competitive intersectional regatta that serves at the last team race before the New England National Qualifier, which will take place next weekend.

Due to dangerously cold weather, snow and strong winds on Sunday, all three regattas only had one day of racing, an unusual occurrence.

Representing the Bulldogs at the Marchiando which took place at MIT were skippers junior Ian Barrows, junior captain Mitchell Kiss, sophomore Malcolm Lamphere and freshman Nic Baird with crews senior Charlotte Belling and juniors Natalya Doris, Chandler Gregoire, Meredith Megarry and Clara Robertson.

These sailors had a perfect event, not losing a single race all day. In the light-moderate and shifty winds of the Charles River, the Bulldogs sailed with several team and skipper-crew combinations.

This speaks to the tremendous effort the entire team has put in this spring as well as the positive and collaborative environment coach Zack Leonard '89, McNay Family Director of Yale Sailing, fosters. The Bulldogs' results have improved consecutively each weekend of the spring season, which bodes well for the team as the New England Team Race National Qualifier, the Fowle Trophy, takes place next weekend at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

The Bulldogs also had success in New London, Conn., at the Camel Team Race. A team consisting of skippers senior Eric Anderson, sophomores Christopher Champa and KB Knapp and freshman Nick Hernandez and crews senior Sanam Rastegar, juniors Amelia Dobronyi and Isabelle Rossi de Leon and sophomore Caroline Colwell earned a fourth-place finish.

The coed team competed in one fleet race this weekend at Harvard, down the river from the Marchiando group. The pair of junior Charles Skoda and freshman Claire Rossi de Leon placed eighth in A division and sophomore skipper Patrick Buehler and junior crew Elizabeth Tokarz placed eighth in B.

Next weekend, the Bulldogs are competing in two team races, the Fowle Trophy in New London and the Mystic Lake Team Race at Tufts University.
