Box Score 2 Tarte Notches Hits In Both Games
Yale knew it faced a daunting task in its season openers at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational. The Bulldogs were facing teams that had already combined to play 17 games. Yale put up a good fight but ultimately dropped both, falling 8-2 to Syracuse and 8-0 to Houston.
Both the Orange and Cougars used big innings late to put the Bulldogs away. Syracuse scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a close game and Houston scored six times in the sixth inning.
Annie Tarte had hits in both games for Yale.
"We knew we had some tough competition ahead of us at this tournament, and we look at it as an opportunity to learn about ourselves," said Yale head coach Jen Goodwin. "Coming out of the gate and scoring some runs against Syracuse was great, and I loved our presence in game two against a very strong Houston team. We had some really good at bats today and will continue to mix up the lineups to get some different looks."
Tarte's RBI double that scored Sydney Ginsberg tied the game with Syracuse at 1-1 in the third inning.
The Orange, though, scored once in the bottom of the third and then had the five-run fifth.
Yale got one back in the sixth. Madison Sack doubled to left. Pinch runner Olivia Vinyard then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
First year Sydney Grobman doubled in her first career game for the Bulldogs.
Against Houston, which received votes in this week's national poll, Yale was limited to three hits, singles by Tarte, Vinyard and Houston area native Allison Skinner.
The Bulldogs play two more games in the tournament on Saturday – vs. UTSA at 9 a.m. CST and UNLV at 2 p.m. CST.
