Yale Game Notes
Â
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After two long road trips, the Yale men's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of the John J. Lee Amphitheater to host Siena on Wednesday night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. ESPN+ has the video.
Â
Yale (2-2) is in the midst of a busy stretch. The Bulldogs played at Oklahoma State on Sunday in the first of four games as part of NIT Season Tipoff. The next three games in the tournament come after the visit from Siena – at Penn State on Saturday at 4 p.m. and then a pair at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Arena at Disney next Monday and Tuesday.
Â
In its first home game on Nov. 8, Yale rolled to a 57-point victory. The three road games were much more nerve wracking. Two were decided in overtime – a victory over Stony Brook and a loss to San Francisco – and in the third the Bulldogs gave a talented Oklahoma State team all it could handle before falling 64-57. The game with the Cowboys in Stillwater featured six ties in the second half, and the Bulldogs were within two points with four minutes remaining.
Â
Paul Atkinson, who leads Yale in scoring at 18.5 ppg., is coming off another strong game, posting a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) at Oklahoma State. Atkinson has scored in double figures in all four games and has a pair of 20+ point performances. He is shooting 58.1 percent from the field and 75 percent (21-of-28) from the free throw line.
Â
Azar Swain (11.8 ppg.) also averages double figures in scoring, while
Jordan Bruner is averaging 9.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while leading the team with 12 blocks.
Matthue Cotton has provided a spark off the bench recently, scoring 16 points vs. San Francisco and 11 at Oklahoma State.
Â
Yale has excelled at the defensive end of the floor, limiting opponents to just 36 percent shooting from the field and 29.3 percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs also have been strong on the boards. They outrebounded the Cowboys 42-38 on Sunday.

HISTORY LESSONS
Â
Yale and Siena are playing for the third time. In the only other meeting in New Haven, the Bulldogs rolled to a 64-46 victory in the 1996-97 season. The following year, the Saints topped Yale 82-70 in New York.
Â
SCOUTING SIENA
Â
Yale is the second straight Ivy League opponent for the Saints, who fell 59-56 at Harvard last Thursday. Siena (2-2) has victories over American and St. Bonaventure. Four players average double figures in scoring, led by Donald Carey at 16.0 ppg. Manny Camper (11.3 ppg., 10.0 rpg.) averages a double-double. Carmen Maciariello, a 2001 Siena graduate, is in his first season the head coach of the Saints.
