NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's tennis team springs back into action this weekend with a home match against St. John's. The Bulldogs face the Red Storm on Saturday at noon at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
It has been a long winter for a Bulldogs team that excelled in the fall and is eager to battle for Ivy League supremacy this season. Samantha Martinelli's excellent fall ended with her at No. 33 in the national rankings after going 12-5 with wins over four ranked players. She also finished at No. 4 in the doubles ranking with partner
Jessie Gong. The two went 14-2, beating seven ranked opponents and winning the ITA All-American Championship.
The first years have also proven themselves as integral members of the squad, led by Chelsea Kung, who slotted in at No. 101 in the nation. Ivy League play begins on March 28th, but before then the Bulldogs go toe to toe with some of the best teams in the country, including No. 7 Texas, No. 13 Central Florida and No. 23 Miami.
The Bulldogs faced off against St. John's earlier this season at the Dartmouth Invitational, winning four out five singles matches they played and hope to replicate that success this weekend.
