ITHACA, N.Y. – The Yale gymnastics team eclipsed the 193 threshold and earned a 193.800 as part of Sunday's Ivy Classic championship event at Cornell. That was good enough for second behind Penn (194.850) and ahead of Brown (193.050) and Cornell (192.975).
Lead-off
Anna Jennings opened up Yale's Ivy competition on vault exercise. Following Jennings, senior
Jade Buford registered a 9.625 to begin her all-around competition. Junior
Charlotte Cooperman competed a full-twisting yurchenko, which paced Yale to a 48.400 team score with a 9.600. Senior
Rebecca Chong secured a 9.775 with a yurchenko half, placing fourth overall. First-year
Aimee Titche gave a promising performance of 9.625. Teammate
Alyssa Firth started her impressive all-around meet with a gorgeous full-twisting yurchenko (9.775, fourth).
On bars, the Bulldogs tallied a 47.300 team event score. Completing her bar set with a stuck double-tuck dismount, Firth did her job as lead-off and posted a 9.275. First-year
Caitlin Henry followed Firth, while sophomore
Lindsay Chia was up next. Swinging big release moves, Chia earned a 9.575. First-year
Raegan Walker exemplified impeccable form, hitting her routine for a 9.750. Buford showed amplitude on her release move and full-twisting double-tuck dismount, while junior
Jacey Baldovino cracked a 9.675.
Yale's third event caught fire, with four out of the six gymnasts scoring a 9.850 or higher. Cooperman laid down a massive 9.850 to start the rotation. This is a new career-high for the Massachusetts native. Behind her, Chia turned in a score of 9.900 competing a near-perfect routine to have the crowd on its feet. That earned her first place. Firth kept up the consistency with a 9.500. Buford notched a score of a 9.750, which sparked the Bulldogs to a 49.200 beam score. The team score placed first. Baldovino threw up a massive beam set, sticking every skill and earning a huge season-high of 9.850. Anchor Firmstone rounded off the third event, sticking her set for a matching 9.850. Baldovino, Cooperman and Firmstone tied for third place.
Yale has one of its highest floor scores of the season, tallying a 48.900 to finish off the meet strong. Baldovino led the event, cracking the 9.800 threshold and setting the bar for the Bulldogs with a huge 9.825. Cooperman added her hit routine to keep up the consistency for the floor line-up putting up a 9.850. Picking up a score of 9.700, Firmstone performed her high-amplitude floor passes. Fellow senior Buford unleashed one of her best performances of her career, bringing home a 9.925 near-perfect score. Following Buford, Chong rallied the team with her dance moves. Anchor Firth closed the last event for Yale, earning a 9.600 for her hit routine. As a squad, Yale finished the rotation with a 48.900.
In the all-around, Buford took home the second-place title, while Firth took home third. Overall, the Bulldogs earned 10 top-three placements on the events today.
The Bulldogs will hit the road to Maryland next weekend for a quad meet as they take on Temple, Penn, William and Mary and the host team on Sun., Mar. 1 at 1 p.m.
