NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Morgan Ross, who helped lead Maryland to NCAA Tournament appearances twice in the last three years as a volunteer assistant, has joined the Yale gymnastics staff as an assistant coach.
Andy Leis, Yale's interim head coach, announced the hiring Wednesday.
Â
"I am thrilled to be introducing
Morgan Ross as our new assistant coach of Yale Gymnastics," said Leis. "Her experience and expertise as a collegiate athlete and coach will be an invaluable resource to our student athletes. She brings an impressive skill set that will help our program that Barbara Tonry built continue to grow and be successful for years to come. Morgan is excited to get to work and we could not be more happy in welcoming her to the YGT family."
Â
Maryland made NCAA appearances in 2019 and 2021 with Ross' help. In 2021 the Terps advanced to the second day of competition at Regionals with a thrilling 195.525-195.475 win over Eastern Michigan. Additionally, Maryland's vault team ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA for each of the last three seasons with Ross' help. She worked with the team while pursuing her master's degree in marine estuarine environmental sciences, which she received from Maryland earlier this year.Â
Â
Ross is a native of Reno, Nev., and attended Flips USA Gymnastics. She graduated with honors from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a B.S. in environmental science and a B.A. in languages (Spanish) in 2018. She competed in all-around for the UAA gymnastics team and was team captain in 2016-17.
Â
"I am honored to join Yale Athletics and work with
Andrew Leis to grow the legacy of athletic and academic achievements cultivated by the late Barbara Tonry," said Ross. "It is my goal to encourage and inspire the next generation of athletes to carry on this esteemed tradition. I'm excited to have an opportunity to create a great student-athlete experience and guide the team to success."
Â
Ross earned multiple MPSF All-Academic Team honors with the Seawolves and was second team MPSF all-conference in all-around, floor and vault in 2017. She is a graduate of Reno High School.
