LONDON, England - Bulldogs are common in Japan, but there will be more than normal next month, especially in Tokyo.
Â
Yale oarsmen
Ollie Wynne-Griffith '17,
Charles Elwes '19 and
Sholto Carnegie '18 were just named to a Great Britain Olympics rowing team that competes in Tokyo on the Sea Forest Waterway from July 22 to 29.
Â
Wynne-Griffith and Elwes are in the GB eight and could race against New Zealand and
Dan Williamson '22, who qualified a few weeks ago. Carnegie has a spot in the four for Team GB. Â
Â
"Unbelievably proud to have been officially selected to team GB for the Olympics," said Carnegie, who won four straight Eastern Sprints Championships and two straight I.R.A. National Championships (2017, 2018), while rowing in the 2015 crew that won the Ladies Challenge Plate at the Henley Royal Regatta. "It felt surreal to be wearing the rings on my chest for the first time. It is something I have dreamt of since I picked up an oar at age 12. I'm excited to put in the hard miles in our final preparation camps to put my boat in the best possible position for hitting the water in Tokyo."Â
Â
Carnegie stroked the GB straight four to a first-place finish (5:56.49) at the 2021 European Championships, crossing the line ahead of Romania and Italy.
Â
Wynne-Griffith, who has the six seat, and Elwes (No. 5) powered the Great Britain eight to a gold medal in the 2021 European Rowing Championships. They edged Romania and Netherlands with a time of 5:30.86 in the April 11 final.
Â
Wynne-Griffith won three straight Eastern Sprint Championships (2015, 2015, 2017), the Ladies Challenge Plate at the 2015 Henley Royal Regatta and the 2017 I.R.A. National Championship.Â
Elwes won four straight Eastern Sprints Championships and three consecutive I.R.A. National Championships while in New Haven. He then stroked the British 4- that won the 2019 Under-23 World Championships.Â
