Five More Elis Olympic Bound

Nine Yale Oarsmen at Tokyo Next Month

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The last time the Yale heavyweights had nine members of its program competing at an Olympics was in 1956, the second time a Bulldog eight (plus coxswain) represented the United States and captured a gold medal.

Yale has nine oarsmen - three undergraduates and six alumni - representing five countries heading to Tokyo next month for the Olympic Games. Five were added to Olympic teams in the last few days, including Simon Keenan '15 (Australia), Andrin Gulich '22 (Switzerland), Paul Jacquot '18 (Switzerland), Jack Lopas '22 (New Zealand) and Stephan Riemekasten '17 (Germany).

Jacquot, who was in the second seat, and Gulich (stroke) helped Team Switzerland's straight four finish second in the B final (eighth overall) of the European Championships. The two of them combined for three different national championships at Yale. Jacquot captained the 2018 Elis to a national title after helping the Bulldogs win Gold the year before. His Yale 1V finished second at the 2016 I.R.A., while he also had a seat in the boat that won the Ladies Plate at the 2015 Henley Royal Regatta. Jacquot, also a French citizen, is a 12-time national team rower between the two countries.

Gulich and Lopas, both originally in Yale's class of 2021, rowed for the 2019 national champions as well as the collegiate champion at the 2019 Head of the Charles. Riemekasten, who helped the Elis win the first of three straight national championships in 2017, is a spare for the Germans at Tokyo. He won a gold medal for his country at the 2015 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in the double.

Keenan powered Australia's 8+ to a silver medal at the U-23 World Championships in 2014 while rowing in four different Yale boats during his stay in New Haven.

Forty-five Yale Heavyweight athletes have qualified for Olympic competition since the school's varsity boat took gold in Paris as the U.S. representative in 1924. The Bulldogs had one other boat become the U.S. eight in 1956, and many individuals have competed for America and other countries since then. The Yale totals are 29 medals, including 21 gold over a dozen different games.
