UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Yale gymnastics team put up a good fight Friday night at Rec Hall but ultimately fell to Penn State, posting a score of 190.650 to the Nittany Lions' 194.725.
Lindsay Chia continued her winning streak in the all-around with a 38.725.
The Bulldogs were coming off a score of 190.800 in the season opener this past Sunday. They started off on the bars (47.975), where they once again posted their highest team rotation score of the meet.
Sherry Wang and
Kendal Toy continued to pull off strong performances. Wang (9.750) again led with the highest bars score on the team. Toy (9.725) followed up her record-matching performance last weekend with another firm bar routine this weekend, which she punctuated with a stick on her double front dismount.
Chia and
Raegan Walker posted the team's highest scores on vault. Walker (9.750) pulled off a Yurchenko half while Chia posted a 9.650 with her Yurchenko full.
The Bulldogs moved on to the floor exercise (47.200), where Chia and Toy continued to be standouts. A fall in the middle of the rotation slowed the team's momentum but the gymnasts who followed pushed for a quick turnaround. Chia (9.750) continued to be a consistent performer for the team as she executed her floor routine with clean landings on both tumbling passes. Toy put up a steady 9.650 for Yale as she pulled off difficult passes with her double pike and front full to a layout.
Toy and Chia again led the team in a strong beam rotation (47.725) to conclude the night. Toy matched her performance from last week by posting a 9.800, which landed her in second for the night. She started her routine with a difficult back handspring layout step out and continued to sprinkle in difficulty with a switch ring leap and sheep jump. Chia stayed steady with a 9.700, which placed her fourth overall.
Head Coach
Andrew Leis said that the goal of this meet was different from the opener.
"With the quick turnaround from last weekend we came into tonight with the goal of improving our consistency, and we accomplished that tonight. This team has so much potential and is just getting started," Leis said.
The team will next compete at LIU, a fellow member of the Gymnastics East Conference, on January 23 at 2:00 p.m.
