NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Yale coed sailing team relied on many members of the team to face a windy weekend.
Weekend four of competition for the Bulldogs proved to be extremely challenging with gale force winds shortening competition at the Moody Trophy and making for a nuclear day of racing at the Danmark Trophy.
On Saturday in New London, Conn., the Danmark Trophy got off 10 races in each division in a windy northeasterly breeze. Sophomore Jack Egan with senior crews Catherine Webb and Ben Markert battled it out in A division among extremely challenging competition. The event was the first cross-regional event of the season for the Bulldogs and meant that the best competitors from around the country were present. First-year skipper Stephan Baker sailed in B division with crews senior Meredith Ryan and junior Megan Grimes. This was Baker's second top coed event of the fall, and he put on an incredible performance on Saturday with his crews, ending the day in third in B division. Sunday brought gale force winds, forcing the regatta coordinators to limit sailing to 420s only. The team put in heavy air crews senior Sam Tobin and sophomore Nathan Sih in A and B division respectively. After a hard-fought day of heavy wind sailing, the Bulldogs finished in sixth place overall.
Over in Wakefield, R.I., the team sailed six races in each division on Saturday at the Moody Trophy. Despite rainy conditions, the wind held at a solid eight to 15 knots from the northeasterly direction. Junior skipper Teddy Nicolosi and first-year crew Sarah Moeder won A division, helping the team to earn first place overall at the event.
