Yale Wins Against SCSU, Records Second-Highest Bars Total in Team History

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale Gymnastics continued its 194 streak at Lee Amphitheater on Sunday, reaching that mark for the second week in a row and sweeping all events to beat SCSU (190.600). The team also tallied its second-highest bars total in history with a 48.975. Oren Aviad, Sherry Wang, Raegan Walker and Lindsay Chia won their respective events while Chia and Sarah Wilson went 1-2 in the all-around.

The team started the meet on vault. Though they had to overcome two falls, the Bulldogs pulled through to total 48.100. Aviad won her first vault title and tied for the third-highest score on the vault in Yale history with a 9.850. She performed a difficult Yurchenko 1.5 twist and stuck the landing. Chia followed close behind with her reliable Yurchenko full to score a 9.800 to tie for the fourth-highest score in Yale vault history.

The Bulldogs performed exceptionally on the bars and continued their winning streak on the event. Wang and Walker tied for first with a 9.850. Walker had near-perfect execution on her releases and vertical handstands. Wang had a steady routine and stuck her dismount. Wilson did not follow far behind with a 9.800 after she had a well-executed routine. Wilson only lost a few tenths on her dismount, where she took a few steps. The team had an overall brilliant performance with five members scoring above 9.725.

The beam challenged the Bulldogs but proved their tenacity. Even with some falls, veterans Chia and Walker pulled off nearly flawless routines and pushed the team total forward. Chia showed great confidence with no bobbles on her routine and a stuck landing to win the event with a 9.875. Chia tied the highest beam score of her career and the third-highest score in team history. Walker (9.850) continued her streak of strong routines on the beam with no bobbles and a stuck dismount. Kendal Toy (9.775) proved her consistency on the beam, showing no bobbles on her difficult back handspring, layout step-out series.

The Bulldogs punctuated their meet with a great showing on floor, where everyone scored above a 9.650. Chia (9.850) added to her several floor titles this season after all clean landings on her routine. Wang (9.825) and Toy (9.800) followed closely behind after securing several titles on floor previously this season.

Interim Head Coach Andrew Leis said that he was very happy with the consistency and progress shown by the team. Leis highlighted the importance of a victory for the seniors.

"Today was all about our seniors and leaving it all on the floor for them. We are so proud of them and grateful for all they have done for YGT," Leis said.

The Bulldogs honored those seniors -- Chia, Toy, captain Seina Cho and Isabelle Lee -- in a ceremony after the meet.

The Bulldogs looks forward to the Barbara & Don Tonry Invitational at Lee Amphitheater next Sunday.
