NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Michael Young, a junior on the Yale Men's Ice Hockey Team, has been nominated for ECAC Hockey's Student-Athlete of the Year.
The Biomedical Engineering major with a 3.79 GPA played in 29 of the 30 games this winter, splitting time between defense and forward while chipping in a goal and three assists. He has been a blueliner all his hockey career until this season, when the Bulldogs were battling injuries and needed help up front.
Young, from Medford, Mass., has been active off the ice in his pursuit of a career in medicine or finance. He interned at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H., and supported areas like hematology and oncology while observing orthopedic surgical operations.
The former Vernon (BCHL) Viper standout is involved in community outreach as well. He's been part of the St. Thomas More Church donation drive for clothing and good and he has raised money for Team Young and the Jimmy Fund Walk.
Young, one of 12 finalists for the award, has also had some entrepreneurial experience. He is the lead contact at Yale for Bulldog Beds by Roomie, Inc., coordinating the delivery and removal of over 400 beds leased by the organization.
