Leis Named USA Gymnastics Coach of the Year; Five Earn All-America Honors

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Yale gymnastics team earned multiple individual awards this weekend at USA Gymnastics' Collegiate National Championships at Cornell's Newman Arena. Andrew Leis, who took over as the team's interim head coach in August 2021 after the passing of legendary head coach Barbara Tonry, was named USA Gymnastics Ken Anderson Women's Coach of the Year. Additionally, five Bulldogs earned All-America honors: senior Lindsay Chia, sophomore Emma Mangiacapre, junior Raegan Walker, sophomore Sherry Wang and sophomore Sarah Wilson

This is the second major award this season for Leis, who was named Gymnastics East Conference Head Coach of the Year last month. He led the Bulldogs to the Ivy Classic title in March with a score of 195.050, the third-highest score in program history. The Bulldogs ranked second in the GEC in the regular season before finishing fourth at the GEC Championship. The team recorded its best bars score in history (49.175) at the GEC Championship.

At the USAG Collegiate National Championships this weekend, Leis led the Bulldogs to one individual title (Walker won vault with a score of 9.875 Sunday) and a team score of 194.025 in Friday's competition. The Bulldogs were within a point of the two teams from that session that qualified for Saturday's team championship competition (Brown scored a 194.925 and Texas Woman's University scored a 194.700 to advance).

Leis initially joined the Yale gymnastics staff prior to the 2020 season as an assistant and made an instant impact on the program, helping the Bulldogs to a second-place finish at the 2020 Ivy Classic.

Besides Walker – who in addition to her vault national championship (after she tied for fourth in the event Friday with a 9.800) also qualified for the USAG individual championships on bars (tied for fifth Friday with a 9.775) and beam (second Friday with a 9.875) – Yale had two other gymnasts advance to compete for individual championships Sunday, earning All-America honors in the process. Chia tied for first on vault Friday with a 9.850 and was second with a 9.875 on floor Friday. Wang (9.850) tied for second on bars Friday. Chia was also honored as a first team All-American in the all around competition for her score of 38.725 Friday (fifth).

Wang earned second team All-America honors for her vault performance. She had a 9.775 Friday (tied for sixth). Mangiacapre was a second team All-American on beam (her score of 9.800 Friday tied for seventh) and Wilson was a second team All-American in the all around competition with a score of 38.050 Friday (ninth).

The awards cap a memorable season for the Bulldogs. Yale had a score of 194.000 or higher five times, including three times in the team's final four meets. The Bulldogs finished first in three of their four home meets, including the Ivy Classic and the Barbara & Don Tonry Invitational.
