Leis Named Yale University Gymnastics Head Coach

GEC & USAG Championship Coach of the Year led Bulldogs to an Ivy Classic Victory this past season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Victoria M. "Vicky" Chun, Yale University's Thomas A. Beckett Director of Athletics, has announced Andy Leis as the head coach of the Yale University gymnastics team.

Leis led the team to multiple records and an Ivy Classic victory this past year while serving as head coach on an interim basis after the passing of legendary Yale coach Barbara Tonry

"I am excited to have Andy continue to lead our gymnastics program. As the interim coach this past season, Andy led our team during their return to competition, they won the Ivy Classic and he was named the Coach of the Year by both the Gymnastics East Conference and at the USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Championship," said Chun. "Andy's vision for the program is one that was shaped by his years of experience in gymnastics and by his mentor and Yale legendary coach, Barbara Tonry. Andy will continue to build upon the great traditions of the gymnastics program and create new ones in the years to come."

Leis earned a pair of major honors in his first season leading the Bulldogs. He was named Coach of the Year by the Gymnastics East Conference (GEC) in March and received the same honor the following month at the USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Championship. In February he led the Bulldogs to an Ivy Classic win with a score of 195.050, the third-highest score in program history.

This season the Bulldogs also had the best bars score in team history (49.175) and the third-highest team beam score in team history (49.100). Yale's National Qualifying Score of 194.110 was the third-highest in team history.

"I am incredibly honored and grateful to be given the opportunity to be the next head coach of Yale Gymnastics. I would first like to thank our Athletic Director Vicky Chun and Associate Athletic Director Jason Strong for believing in me, supporting me, and for their leadership. I am thrilled to be able to continue the incredible legacy Barb built, honor the traditions of Yale Gymnastics, and carry on the success of this program into the future," said Leis. "It has been an absolute privilege to work with these amazing women every day over the past few years and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for YGT. I am excited and motivated to get to work and continue to develop, mentor and support our student-athletes in their time here at Yale. Go Bulldogs!"

At the 2022 USAG Collegiate National Championships, Leis led Yale to one individual title (junior Raegan Walker won vault with a score of 9.875) and a team score of 194.025. The Bulldogs ranked second in the GEC in the regular season and finished fourth at the GEC Championship, where Walker set the school record with a score of 9.950 on the uneven bars.

The Bulldogs had many individual accomplishments this season under Leis' tutelage. Senior Lindsay Chia was named GEC Gymnast of the Year and sophomore Sherry Wang was named GEC Co-Newcomer of the Year. The team had seven first-team All-America selections and three second team All-America selections at the USAG National Championships.

The Bulldogs achieved a total of 33 career high scores this year. They also excelled academically, with 13 gymnasts earning USAG Scholar-Athlete honors.

Leis initially joined the Yale staff prior to the 2020 season as an assistant under Tonry. In that role he helped the Bulldogs to a second-place finish at the 2020 Ivy Classic.

In addition to coaching, Leis has worked as a statistician for NBC Sports. He served in this role for multiple Olympic Games, assisting the broadcasting team with research and statistics.
Originally from Suffield, Conn., Leis graduated from UMass-Amherst in 2002 with a degree in sports management. He captained the men's gymnastics team his senior year.
