NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Saturday the Yale women's track and field team hosted and participated in the 2022 Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and the Bulldogs put down some impressive performances despite the less-than-ideal weather.
Captain
Emma Vasen was the first competitor for the Bulldogs and secured points with a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw. Vasen will return on Sunday to compete in the discus throw and the shot put.
Jocelyn Chau and
Kosana Weir started the day on the track by securing two of the top four qualifying spots in the 1500m run. Their heat, the first heat, contained the seven fastest qualifiers, so Sunday's final will be a tight rematch for the gold. The middle distance team made another big statement in the 800m run, with
Samantha Friborg and
Maya Sharp earning qualifying spots in Sunday's final. Friborg is the Bulldogs' fastest qualifier and won her heat soundly. In the 400m hurdles, veteran
Addison Coy came out as the second-fastest qualifier and is set up for a stunning showdown against top qualifier Brooke Overholt of Cornell.
Yale's 400m team of
Ella Mainwaring Foster,
Sophie Isom and
Bridget Vitu narrowly missed the finals, being three of the first four competitors behind the final spot. Senior star
Libby McMahon could not compete today, and her efforts were greatly missed by teammates and fans alike. McMahon has been a dominant force in the league this year and will end her career as a Yale all-time legend.
The day ended with the 10k in cold, wet and windy conditions that included some hail.
Maddie Ghazarian and
Kathryn Rodrigues fought through the elements to finish seventh and ninth, respectively.
