CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Yale gymnastics team placed second in its matchup against the University of North Carolina and the University of Wisconsin- Stout Monday evening at Carmichael Arena. The Bulldogs totaled 194.250, trailing UNC by two points and topping Wisconsin-Stout by a little less than three points. The team secured podium finishes on all events, including two for
Raegan Walker. The team had a solid meet with no major mistakes on all events, securing 48.000+ scores in each.
Vault was a solid event for the Bulldogs with all scores above 9.600 (48.325). Both
Sherry Wang (9.775) and
Gigi Sabatini (9.750) posted big scores after they executed their full twisting Yurchenkos very well. Wang finished on the podium in third while Sabatini narrowly missed the podium by .015 points.
The uneven bars was strong for the Bulldogs as well (48.475), particularly for Walker. She scored a 9.850 and was second in the meet. She had perfect form on her handstands and nearly stuck her double layout dismount. Overall five Bulldogs finished with 9.500+ scores.
The team turned things around after a challenging set on the balance beam last week. The beam was the Bulldogs' highest scoring event for this meet (48.775). Walker once again stood out in the event as she secured a third-place finish and tied her season high, 9.825. She had solid landings on all her elements with no visible bobbles and a good landing on her dismount.
On the floor, the Bulldogs also made a strong comeback from a challenging set last week (48.675).
Hana Strause bounced back from last week and placed third (9.800) on floor this week. She had clean landings on all her passes, sticking her 2.5 twist to punch front. This is already Strause's second podium finish on floor in only three meets.
Sarah Wilson scored a 9.750 and finished with a 38.775 in all-around competition.
Yale will face the University of New Hampshire, Penn, and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in a quad meet on Sunday in New Hampshire.
