Yale Falls to LIU; Strause, Wilson Stand Out

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Yale gymnastics team fell to LIU in the season opener Sunday, posting a score of 190.125 to the Sharks' 194.400. Junior Sarah Wilson and first year Hana Strause established themselves as standouts, as Wilson won the all-around title and Strause shined in her debut. They and Raegan Walker were Yale's top finishers in their respective events.
 
Yale had a strong start on bars (48.325), the Bulldogs' highest-scoring event of the meet. Wilson had the highest score on bars on the team and second-highest in the meet overall with a 9.825. Her routine was filled with perfect handstands, seamless transitions from the high to low bar, and successful release moves. Junior Sherry Wang followed Wilson and tied for the third-highest event score, 9.775. Wang punctuated her routine with her signature full twisting double back dismount.
 
The Bulldogs continued steadily on vault (47.525) with no major mistakes. Walker led the Bulldogs in the event with a 9.625. Walker performed her signature Yurchenko 0.5 twist on vault. Wilson closely trailed Walker with a 9.600. Wilson stuck a Yurchenko full twist.
 
The team continued onto floor (46.325), where Wilson continued to make her mark. She secured the second-highest score in the competition (9.750) with all solid landings on her tumbling passes. Strause made a successful debut, earning the third-highest score in the event (9.725). Her most difficult tumbling pass was a 2.5 twisting layout to punch front. The team unfortunately suffered three falls on the event.
 
Yale ended the meet on beam (47.950), their second-highest scoring event. The Bulldogs trailed LIU by a close .225 margin in this event. Wilson and Strause tied for the second-highest score in the competition. Strause had a clean routine with no bobbles and concluded her routine with a double twisting layout dismount. Wilson also had a solid routine with no bobbles.
 
Yale will compete against Brown in the home opener next Sunday.
