BOSTON – The Yale women's track and field team continues to improve. Racing in Boston for the third successive week on Friday, the Bulldogs posted a number of fast times and fierce performances across a successful day of competition.
Yale demonstrated remarkable strength in depth over the 400m, with seven athletes running 58 seconds or faster. Leading them home was team captain Aliya Boshnak in 56.61, with PRs galore just behind her. Sophomore Bridget Vitu's 56.72, senior Sydney McCord's 56.87, sophomore Iris Bergman's 57.00, first year Peyton Parker's 57.40 and sophomore Arielle Moore's 58.02 all represent new lifetime bests. Each of them got a chance to spike up again later on over the 4x400m relay. Yale put two teams under 3:50, one of them placing sixth with a 3:47.36 time and the other placing 12th with a 3:49.84 clocking.
That sprint success carried over to distances either side of the 400m. Earlier, over the 800m, senior Samantha Friborg ran a scintillating 2:05.57, which puts her third in the Ivy League so far this season. First year Ruby Barton also ran a new PR of 2:16.29. Yale saw another PR in the 1000m thanks to Olivia Birney's 2:55.75 clocking. Later, over the shorter 200m distance, junior Mira Thakur ran a promising 25.65.
PRs continued to be rewritten over the distance events, with Friborg showing remarkable recovery from her earlier 800m to come close to her PR with a 4:48.22 effort over the mile. Close behind her was first year Linde Fonville, whose 4:54.09 was also a PR. Over the 3000m, first year Carmel Fitzgibbon came in just behind junior Kyra Pretre's 9:42.74 on her way to a 9:47.38 PR. The Valentine Invitational also represented the first opportunity of the season for the Bulldogs to lace up over 5000m, something that junior Sophia Karperos and first year Miranda Lorsbach took advantage of as they both dipped under 18 minutes to set new PRs with times of 17:51.16 and 17:59.70 respectively. Junior Kathryn Rodrigues competed in the 5K late Friday night, finishing in 17:28.61.
Overall, the Bulldogs can take confidence from a PR-filled day at Boston University. Friday's racers will get two more crucial weeks of training before the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. In the meantime, look out for more impressive performances from the rest of the team Saturday at the 16th Giegengack Invitational at Coxe Cage, Yale's home track.
