COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Yale gymnastics team placed fifth in the Maryland Five Meet Sunday, but had a strong showing in the vault and uneven bars, totaling 48+ on both events. The Bulldogs scored 192.750 overall.
On vault,
Oren Aviad and
Sherry Wang were the top scorers with a 9.775. Aviad stuck her Yurchenko 1.5 twist while Wang stuck her Yurchenko full twist. Yale had no major mistakes to score a 48.650.
The Bulldogs pulled off a strong performance on their best event this season, bars (48.525). Wang was again the top scorer for the Bulldogs with a 9.825. The highlight of her routine was her stuck full twisting double back dismount.
Sarah Wilson was second on the team with a 9.800. The highlight of her routine was her strong Tkatchev release.
Yale found things difficult on the balance beam (47.950).
Hana Strause was the top scorer with little to no balance checks in her routine even in her difficult back handspring layout stepout combination.
Emma Mangiacapre was also the top scorer with beautiful lines in her front aerial to cat leap. Both gymnasts scored a 9.800.
The Bulldogs also found difficulty in the floor (47.625). Wilson was the team's top scorer with a 9.725. She only had a small step on her double pike pass during her exercise.
Megan Brueck scored a 9.650 to tie
Lauren Holt and
Riley Meeks for second on the team. Brueck's most difficult pass was a 1.5 twist to split jump.
Maryland (197.100) won the meet, followed by Towson (196.575), Temple (196.350) and George Washington (195.450).
Yale returns to competition for one of the most important meets of the season, the GEC Championships, next Saturday.
