RALEIGH, N.C. – On Day two of the Raleigh Relays Friday the Yale men's track and field team had a strong showing across each of three events.
In the discus competition, the Bulldogs performed admirably with
Matt Appel placing third in a very competitive field (the winner of the event ranking top-three nationally) with a distance of 55.16m. Although this was not an out-an-out PR for Appel it is worth noting that this performance was more than 7 meters further than his performance at last year's Raleigh Relays.
Nolan Recker also finished inside the top 10 with 48.73m. Recker described the day as a "promising platform to the build off for the rest of the outdoor season".
Chris Ward rounded off the Bulldogs less than a meter behind, finishing 15
th overall.
First year
Brian Di Bassinga placed a formidable sixth in the triple jump also against stiff competition. Warm conditions and a very slight (+0.2) tailwind provided favorable conditions and despite managing a minor injury, he was able to take full advantage of the weather with a jump of 14.71m -- only marginally off his already impressive personal record.
To end the day, Yale had two quality competitors in the 10000m. As the evening cooled, with races running as late as 10.30 p.m.,
Cade Brown and
Sean Kay ran in a highly competitive field. Brown finished in a new PR of 29:58.18. This improved personal best bumped him up two spots in the Yale all-time list and he now sits in sixth place. Kay finished five places behind in the competition with a run of 30:22.94. This performance additionally made a dent in the all-time lists and Kay now sits in 11th place. This is especially promising as Kay is only a junior and so will have a number of chances in the future to keep moving up the ranks.
Saturday is the last day of Raleigh Relays competition and there will be several highlights on the track, including both the 4x100m relay (running for the very first time this season) and 4x400m relay. Also,
Thomas Cirrito and
Drake Prince will of course be ones to watch in the 800m.
