Yale Retains Durand Cup Against Dartmouth

DERBY, Conn. -- This Saturday morning, the Yale lightweights fielded five eights in four races for their third and final home regatta of the season, against Dartmouth. The Bulldogs showcased depth with a sweep as Yale reclaimed the Durand Cup following yet another closely contested varsity matchup.

Barn burners have been the norm for the Yale varsity all season, and this Saturday was no different when the Eli lightweights took on Big Green in a race that featured multiple lead changes and a finishing margin of 1.2 seconds.

Head winds and humidity highlighted the forecast when the Blue and Green varsity crews locked into the stake boats in preparation for the Durand Cup at 8:20 a.m. Off the start, Yale picked up a few seats to gain advantage over Dartmouth, but the Bulldogs' lead would not last long as the Big Green took moves to push out in front by the time both crews completed the Derby dog-leg turn. In the latter half of the race, Yale responded to close the gap and eventually gain a half-length lead by the closing 500 meter mark, which the Bulldogs maintained through the finish line despite a strong sprint from Dartmouth. Yale's victory extended their Durand Cup win-streak into its second decade.

Prior to Durand Cup victory, the Yale junior varsity raced first and set the tone for their fellow Bulldogs in the races to follow. Out of the stakeboats, Yale took advantage over Dartmouth and expanded their lead throughout the race to finish with a commanding victory.

In the penultimate race of day, the race profile of the 3V eights mirrored their JV peers, as the Bulldogs gained a lead off the start and increased their margin over the 2000m distance in path to victory.

The final race of the day featured the Blue and Green 4Vs, as well as the Yale 5V. Off the start, the Yale 4V took advantage and built on their margin throughout the race to finish first, followed by Dartmouth in second and the Yale 5V in third.
