DERBY, Conn. – In their home opener this Saturday at Gilder Boathouse, the Yale lightweights won all three races against the visiting Georgetown Hoyas. A favorable tailwind and a bit of downstream current meant favorable conditions for both squads.
The varsity eights race was another classic as this burgeoning rivalry resumed once more in Derby. Off the start, the Elis pushed out to a lead in Lane 2, but as the two crews passed through the Derby turn, the Hoyas capitalized on their inside position and cut into Yale's lead.
Coming out of the turn, it was Yale's challenge to successfully withstand the strong Hoya push. The Bulldogs were able to do so throughout the last quarter of the race, and finished with a time of 5:35.6, with Georgetown just trailing behind with a time of 5:38.4.
The lower boats for Yale rowed prior to the varsity event, in this order: Yale 5V 4+s, the 3V (& 4V), and then the 2V.
In the first race of the day, the Yale 5V broke into two coxed fours for an exhibition. What started as a friendly duel became an incredible barn burner, as the two Eli crews refused to give an edge to their peers until a final sprint effort by Yale 'A' secured a narrow victory of merely 0.2 seconds.
The second race of the day featured a three-way battle between the Georgetown 3V and two Yale crews: 3V and 4V. Off the start, the Yale 3V took the lead and held advantage to victory, with the Yale 4V challenging their peers throughout the 2000m distance to finish second, followed by Georgetown in third.
In the third race of the day, the junior varsity eights faced off. Yale took a commanding lead off the start, which they expanded throughout the race to defeat the Hoya JV by open water.
