NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Mike Gennaro, Associate Head Coach of Heavyweight Crew, has announced that rising senior
Harry Keenan has been elected captain for the 2023-24 school year. Keenan becomes the second coxswain in program history to be named captain. The first was two-time captain Bucky Byers, Y'40.
Â
"I am thrilled that Harry has been elected captain by his teammates for next season," said Gennaro. "Harry has been a natural leader since the first day he arrived on campus. Historically, our team has always been led by skilled, confident, influential coxswains, and Harry has flawlessly carried on that tradition. There has only ever been one coxswain that was voted captain of the crew. Harry will be the second, and I think that speaks volumes to how much he is respected by our squad."
Â
During his sophomore year, Keenan was the coxswain of the undefeated National Championship-winning junior varsity 8+. This season, he helped lead the Varsity 8+ crew to an undefeated cup racing season, an Eastern Sprints Championship, an Ivy League Championship, a 4th place finish at the National Championships, and a victory at the 156th Yale-Harvard Regatta. The Sydney, Australia native is also a First Team All-Ivy League honoree as well as a two-time IRCA Scholar-Athlete.

"It's a privilege to be elected captain," said Keenan. "Over the past few years, every class has had many people that would make excellent captains. Our class is no different, so to be chosen is truly an honor. I think I speak for our entire senior class when I say that no label will define how each of us is going to lead. Last year's captain, Fergus, showed us that effective leadership can only come from effective action. We can't wait to set the tone for next season. It's an incredible team, beyond just on-water achievements. I am so lucky to be mates with every single member of this team."
