Sarah Wilson wrapped up her final collegiate meet on her home floor in style on Saturday night. The Bulldogs captain won the Gymnastics East Conference (GEC) Individual Championship in bars to lead the Yale gymnastics team to a runner-up finish at Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Ella Tashjian captured individual gold for the host team, securing a team score of 195.125.
For the second season in a row, Yale finished as the conference runner-up to Penn, but the Elis continue to perform at an extremely high level, making this one of the most accomplished campaigns in program history. This was the fourth time this season that the Bulldogs scored over 195 points in an event. The Elis had previously topped the 195-point threshold just four times over the past five seasons.
Penn claimed the team title with a total score of 196.275, a season-high for the Quakers. Brown finished third overall.
The Bulldogs led off on vault to begin the first rotation. Tashjian was the top performer for the Elis, vaulting to a score of 9.775.
Wilson paced the Bulldogs in bars, recording a 9.9 to top every other competitor in the field. First year
Lily Aucoin performed well with a 9.825.
On beam,
Emma Mangiacapre stood out for the host team with a routine that resulted in a 9.850 which tied her for fourth place overall.
Yale ended the conference championships with a spectacular performance in the floor exercise. The Bulldogs saved the best for last, as Tashjian was the sixth and final performer to go. The first year was nearly flawless, recording a 9.90, tying her with Cornell's Alexandra Quiana for the highest score of the meet. Wilson and
Chloe DeJoy also recorded top-three finishes with a 9.875.
Following the meet, the conference honored the seniors from the eight member teams and doled out its season awards. Head coach Andy Leis was honored as Coach of the Year, while Tashjian took home Newcomer of the Year.
