WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Y150 competed in the preliminary heats of the IRA National Championship Regatta Friday morning in West Windsor, N.J. The 2V heat was a race for lanes to reassess changes in the speed order since Eastern Sprints; Yale finished fifth, matching their previous seed. The 1V finished fourth in their heat, meaning they will compete in the Petite Final on Sunday.
The lightweight JV crews from Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Navy, Cornell, Dartmouth and Penn kicked off the three-day national championship regatta with their 8:00 a.m. heat for lanes. All boats got off to a clean start, with Harvard, Navy and Cornell emerging as the race leaders within the first 500m and the Bulldogs in the mix. The middle 1000m saw Yale maintain a conservative pace as they fell towards the back of the pack, only to turn the heat on with about 600m to go to pull about even with Dartmouth and Penn. Yale followed this up with a charge in the last couple hundred meters to overtake Dartmouth and Penn – the Eastern Sprints 2V champions – and halve the distance to Cornell. Maintaining their no. 5 seed, the Yale 2V will compete in the Grand Final against the same field on Sunday at 9:50 a.m.
Originally scheduled for 9:00 a.m., the second heat of the lightweight varsity eight featuring Yale, Penn, Princeton and Navy was delayed by several hours due to equipment breakage. No. 2 seed Penn controlled the race from the beginning; Yale fought to stay in the mix with Navy and Princeton but started to fall away in the middle stages of the race, ultimately finishing fourth. Yale will compete in the Petite Final on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against MIT.
