About the Regatta
  • This year marks the 157th regatta in these two programs' storied history.
  • The first race was held in 1852 on the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee in Center Harbor, N.H.
  • "The Race" began when Yale issued a challenge to Harvard to "test the superiority of the oarsmen of the two colleges." Following the first race in 1852, there was a layoff period until 1855 when Yale reignited the challenge between both institutions.
  • The first YH regatta was only two miles long, which eventually transitioned to a four-mile race.

Series Records
  • 1V (Sexton Cup): Harvard leads 95-61 (1 no result)
  • 2V (F. Valentine Chappell Trophy): Harvard leads 77-42
  • 3V (New London Cup): Harvard leads 76-41-1

A Look Back
Last June saw Yale's first varsity boat defeat Harvard for the 61st time with a finish of 14:29.4 to Harvard's 14:33.3. Yale's second varsity took the win over Harvard by four seconds, as well as the 4V in the combination race on Friday evening by nine seconds. The Crimson took the victory in the third varsity race by just over two seconds.
