Karas Sets Mile School Record; Bulldogs Compete in Boston

BOSTON – The Yale men's track and field team headed up to BU for the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite Saturday. The tough competition brought out the best in the Bulldogs, with the highlight of the day being junior Owen Karas setting a new school record in the mile. Numerous other Bulldogs set PRs.

Junior Owen Karas was fresh off his 3k record last week and decided to test his speed over the shorter mile distance. His time of 3:58.37 set a new school record, beating the previous mark by James Randon '17 of 3:58.85.
Sophomore Nathan Lebowitz threw well in the weight throw to place second. In a tight battle, his mark of 16.17 meters was just enough to hold on to second -- .02 better than the mark for Albany's John Coddington.
After a busy day Friday at Harvard's Crimson Elite meet, sophomore Andrew Fu returned to the track in the 60m. Fu is building experience as the championship season draws near.
Sophomore Antonio Bravo did much of the early work in his 800-meter heat and just narrowly placed second in 1:56.89. Bravo returned later in the 400 meters, running 50.88.
Senior Simon Jupp placed first in his heat of the 500 meters, running 1:04.72 to just miss out on a PR.
In the mile, first year Max Bishop set a new PR of 4:08.86 as he continues to progress in his debut indoor season. In the next heat the Bulldogs worked well together, with senior Jack Sendek running 4:09 to set a new PR and sophomore Caden Montini and senior Varun Oberai right behind in 4:10. Sophomore Jack Diaz made a big move to win his heat in decisive fashion in 4:19.
The sprinters returned for the 200 meters. Senior James Grindle placed second in his heat, running 22.23 seconds, and Fu was narrowly behind.
In the 1,000 meters senior Calvin Katz made his return to the track in fine form, taking the heat win with a time of 2:25.60. First year Matthew Schutzbank returned for his second event of the day, running 2:31.38 to take the win.
The final event of the day was the 3,000 meters. Senior Leo Brewer ran a smart race to run a new PR of 8:01 and move into fourth in Yale history. Junior Will Sheehy improved up his performance from last week to set a new PR of 8:44.

Up next:

The Bulldogs head into another double-meet week. The David Hemery Valentine Invitational takes place Feb. 14 at BU and will once again provide a great opportunity for fast times. The Bulldogs also return to Coxe Cage on Feb. 15 for the Giegengack Invitational. This weekend will be a final opportunity to improve PRs prior to the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships.
