Excellent Performances for Bulldogs at Mark Young Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The conditions were ideal for an excellent day of competition for the Mark Young Invitational Saturday. This was the last home meet of the regular season, and the Yale men's track and field team put on a show. The sunny and warm day included a number of PRs.

The Meet:

  • The steeplechase was the first event of the day on the track. Senior Jack Sendek claimed first place with a strong performance (9:44.68). Sophomore Jack Diaz set a new PR of 9:50.74 to place second.
  • In the 1500 meters, first year Matthew Schutzbank set a new PR to place first in 3:52.17. He outkicked sophomore Guy Stevens and first year Seb Sutch, who ran 3:52.41 and 3:52.85 respectively. Juniors Alex Mader and Will Sheehy both set PRs, of 4:00.32 and 4:05.36 respectively.
  • Sophomore Finnegan Quinn placed first in the 400 meters with a fast clocking of 48.73 to set a new PR. Classmate Antonio Bravo placed third in 51.05
  • it was a tight battle among the Bulldogs in the 100 meters. Senior James Grindle, junior Andrew Farr, senior Jacob Kao and junior Mason Evans swept the top four places. Grindle took the win just outside a PR in 10.81.
  • Sophomore Jamaal Darlington placed third in the high jump with his height of 1.91 meters, which was just outside a PR.
  • Senior Calvin Katz had an excellent last lap to claim the win in the 800 meters in 1:51.67. Sophomore Brian Gamble was closely behind in third. Going in the second heat, sophomore Liam Sullivan took the heat win in 1:58.59.
  • The Bulldogs swept the top three spots in the 200 meters. Grindle posted a rapid 21.22 to set a new PR. Kao was in second with 21.59 and sophomore Lucas Mylon placed third in a PR of 21.65.
  • The final event of the day was the 4x400 meters. The Bulldogs rounded out a successful day by placing first in 3:21.05. The team consisting of Mylon, Bravo, Gamble and Katz showed their class to pull away from the rest of the field.
Up Next: 
  • A busy week awaits the Bulldogs, with the famous Penn Relays meet taking place between Apr. 24-26. The Ken O'Brien Pre-Conference Meet hosted by UMass takes place on Apr. 26. These meets will give the Bulldogs a great final opportunity to test themselves before Heps.
