Bulldogs Set Tone During First Day of Penn Relays

Gloria Guerrier (shown here) finished third in her heat.
PHILADELPHIA – Three members of the Yale women's track and field team kicked off competition Thursday at the prestigious Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. With just two weeks remaining before the Outdoor Ivy League Championships, the Bulldogs seized the opportunity to make the most of their final tune-up weekend. Full results can be found here.

The Bulldogs:
  • Junior Carmel Fitzgibbon delivered a standout performance in the 1500m, representing Yale with a blistering final lap of 1:06. Her finishing time of 4:18.97 marks a personal best and places her third on Yale's Outdoor All-Time Top 10 list — an impressive milestone in her collegiate career.
  • Junior Charlotte Whitehurst also set a major personal record in the 5000m, clocking 16:26.01 — an improvement of nearly 15 seconds over her previous best. She ran a tactically sharp race, steadily moving up the field with each lap and never getting passed. Her strategy paid off as she secured fifth place in her heat.
  • In the 400m hurdles, sophomore Gloria Guerrier crossed the line in 1:00.20, earning third place in her heat. While just shy of a personal record, Guerrier closed strong and turned in a solid performance.

Up Next:
  • Friday, more members of Yale's track and field team will compete at the Ken O'Brien Pre-Conference Meet in Amherst, Mass., while several Bulldogs will continue to represent Yale on Day Two of the Penn Relays.
