AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After opening the 2010
season with a three-game sweep at Maryland-Baltimore County, the
Yale baseball team headed farther south to challenge the University
of Rhode Island on Tuesday at the RussMatt Central Florida
Invitational. The Bulldogs' hot bats also made the trip from
the Charm City to Auburndale, Fla. as Yale piled up 10+ runs for
the third straight game en route to knocking off the Rams by a
score of 10-5. Sophomore catcher Ryan Brenner led the Elis at the
plate, going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in.
Mazzuto Family Head Coach John Stuper applauded Brenner's
efforts both at the plate and behind it. “Brenner was
swinging the bat very well today, and he also called a great
game,” said the 18-year veteran of the Bulldogs'
dugout.
The Bulldogs, who will play seven more games in the Sunshine
State, remain unbeaten at 4-0. Rhode Island falls to 1-8.
With his quartet of runs batted in, Brenner has matched his
freshman season total of seven RBI just 14 at-bats into the 2010
campaign. Junior Andrew Kolmar, who was named Ivy League co-Player
of the Week earlier today, and junior Andrew Moore both drove in
two runs, while senior first baseman Trygg Larsson-Danforth also
picked up an RBI. Sophomore Zach Tobolowsky went 3-for-4 and drove
in a run as the Bulldogs pounded out 13 hits.
On the mound, junior lefthander Vinny Lally (1-0) worked the
first five innings to earn the victory for Yale. Sophomore
righthander Greg Lyons held the Rams scoreless over the last four
frames to chalk up his first career save. Lyons, who also tossed a
perfect inning on Sunday at UMBC, allowed just two hits and struck
out five batters, including striking out the side in the eighth.
“Greg looked dominant today,” said Stuper. “He
was hitting his spots with all of his pitches”.
The Elis will trek from Auburndale to nearby Winter Haven, Fla.
to kick off four consecutive games at Chain of Lakes Park with a 3
p.m. contest tomorrow afternoon against Miami of Ohio.
