Shaw Selected by Mariners in 7th Round of MLB Draft

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Right-handed pitcher Colton Shaw was chosen by the Seattle Mariners with the 17th pick of the seventh round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday. Shaw, the second Ivy Leaguer taken in this year's draft, is the 44th Yale player selected in MLB Draft history – including 39 since 1993. The Texas native went 212th overall.

"Colton is a tremendous leader in our program, serving as a captain with integrity and grit," Brian Hamm, Fay Vincent '31 Head Coach of Baseball said. "Following his junior season, he committed himself to a focused and demanding offseason, determined to take his game to the next level. That dedication paid off with an outstanding spring season that received a lot of attention from professional scouts."

Shaw is the 11th player in Bulldogs history to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft. Shaw was a workhorse on the mound for the Bulldogs throughout his collegiate career. In 2025, he started 12 games, recording a 6-2 record with a 3.13 ERA. He ranked in the top five in the conference in all major starting pitching categories. Shaw earned All-Ivy laurels in three straight seasons, landing a spot on the first team in 2025.

As the team captain, Shaw helped lead Yale to its first regular season Ivy League title since 2018. Shaw also excelled academically, earning CSC Academic All-District honors as a senior.

Yale's highest draft pick ever was Ron Darling '82, who went ninth overall to the Texas Rangers in 1981. Dan Lock '95 went 51st overall as a second-round pick by the Houston Astros in the 1994 draft, and Jon Steitz '02 went 88th overall as a third-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2001.

"With the mentorship of our pitching coach, Chris Wojick, Colton has developed a strong foundation of skill and knowledge that will serve him well at the next level," Hamm said. "He now joins the proud tradition of Yale pitchers who have gone on to pitch professionally, and we couldn't be prouder to see his hard work rewarded with his selection by the Seattle Mariners."
