HANOVER, N.H. – The Yale baseball team got a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Pat Ludwig in game one and then two RBI off the bat of junior Andrew Kolmar in the nightcap on Sunday at Dartmouth, but the Bulldogs came up short on both ends of the Ivy League twinbill. Ludwig struck out 10 batters as Big Green shutout the Elis, 3-0, and Kolmar homered and tripled in a 7-4 loss.

Yale drops to 3-7 in Ivy League play with a 16-15-1 overall mark in the 2010 season. Dartmouth improves to 15-12 overall with a 6-4 Ancient Eight record.

In addition to Kolmar's two RBI, senior first baseman Trygg Larsson-Danforth and junior second baseman Gant Elmore each knocked in a run for the Bulldogs. Sophomore shortstop Matt Schmidt went 3-for-5 in the twinbill.

On the mound, Ludwig pitched a complete game in the seven-inning game one loss, allowing just two earned runs in addition to his 10 K's. Junior southpaw Vinny Lally took the hill in the nine-inning second game.

In the first game, Dartmouth got on the board in the second inning via a two-out rally. Jason Brooks hit a double off Ludwig, and Brett Gardner followed with a seeing-eye single to plate the game's first run. Big Green would run the score to 2-0 in the fifth inning, as Brooks doubled once again to set the table. This time, it was lead-off hitter Jake Carlson cashing in with an RBI single.

Dartmouth tacked on a third run- this one unearned- in the sixth inning while Young allowed just two Yale baserunners passed first base in the 3-0 victory.

Ludwig (3-4) went the distance for the Bulldogs, scattering six hits and two earned runs in the losing effort. The sophomore struck out a career-best 10 batters and walked four. Young (2-3) allowed six hits as well and did not issue a walk in the complete game victory. The senior ace registered two strikeouts.

Big Green wasted no time grabbing a lead in the nightcap, plating five runs in the first inning off of Lally. Jim Wren hit a three-run homer and Zack Bellenger had a two-run roundtripper in the frame.

The Bulldogs would take a pair back in the top of the third inning, as Kolmar led off with second home run of the season. Two batters later, Schmidt tripled down the right field line and Elmore followed with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 5-2.

After an RBI triple from Jim O'Dowd ran the score back to 6-2 in favor of the home team, the Elis put together their best chance to draw even in the top of the sixth inning. Schmidt led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on an Elmore groundout. After Megee popped up to shortstop for the second out of the frame, Larsson-Danforth laced a double down the left field line that scored Schmidt to make it a 6-3 ballgame. Sophomore Ryan Brenner followed with a walk, and classmate Charlie Neil was hit by a pitch to load the bases and chase Big Green starter Ben Murray from the contest. With the go-ahead run at the plate in designated hitter Josh Scharff, ace reliever Cole Sulser pitched out of the jam with a strikeout of the freshman batter.

Wren's fourth RBI of the game proved to be a key insurance run, as his single in the bottom of the seven inning pushed the score to 7-3. Neil singled to start the Bulldogs' ninth-inning rally, and Kolmar followed with a run-scoring triple to the gap in right-centerfield. Sulser would retire the next two batters, however, to close out the 7-4 win.

Lally (5-2) went the first 6.1 innings for Yale, allowing seven runs on seven hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts. Senior right-hander Robert Gruber allowed just one hit and one walk in a scoreless 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. Murray (3-3) surrendered three hits and three runs in 5.2 frames to record the win for Dartmouth, and Susler (3) notched the save with hit 3.1 innings of relief.

The Bulldogs and Big Green will close out their season series tomorrow with another doubleheader. The first pitch of game one from Red Rolfe Field is scheduled for noon.
