Whiteman Picks Up Two Hits, Steals Pair of Bases

West Haven - The Yale baseball team is one built on speed. The Bulldogs showed flashes of that quickness in the base paths during Sunday's 4-2 loss to Holy Cross at Historic Yale Field.

Freshman Simon Whiteman went 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases for Yale (1-11-1).

"He showed what he could do when he gets on base," Yale head coach John Stuper said. "He stole a couple of bases. He's starting to figure it out."

Whiteman now has five stolen bases on the season. Richard Slenker also added a stolen base against the Crusaders

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Slenker singled to center field and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Bulldogs deficit to a run. Yale tied the game in the following frame, as Tim DeGraw plated Whiteman with a sacrifice bunt.

Holy Cross answered with a pair of runs in the seventh to pull away and secure the win.

For Yale, Brent Lawson added two hits, including a double. Harrison White, Benny Wanger and Griffin Dey also added hits for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore Mason Kukowski took the mound in relief for the final two innings. He was lights out, allowing just one hit and striking out four.

"Mason threw the ball outstandingly well today," Stuper said.

Yale split a doubleheader with the Crusaders on Saturday. That included the Bulldogs first win of the season, in which they scored a season-high 10 runs in a 10-5 win.

Yale will travel to play in-state rival Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Hamden.
