Yale Beats In-state Rival Quinnipiac

Box Score

Bulldogs record 8 SB, White goes 5-for-5

Hamden – The Yale baseball team can be a nightmare in the base paths. The Bulldogs proved that with their speed and aggressiveness on Wednesday.

Yale totaled eight stolen bases, highlighting an 8-6 victory over in-state rival Quinnipiac at Quinnipiac Baseball Field.

"We were very aggressive on the bases," said head coach John Stuper said, who hasn't had a team steal that many bases in a game since the mid 90s. "That has to be a big part of our offense."

Tim DeGraw and Simon Whiteman each had two stolen bases, and six different Bulldogs stole a base against the Bobcats.

Meanwhile, junior Harrison White had a career day. Hitting out of the leadoff spot, White went 5-for-5 with a double. The five hits were a career high.

"Harrison was locked in today," Stuper said. "One of his hits was a swinging bunt, but the other were squared up line drives. It's not easy to stick five hits."

Whiteman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Alec Hoeschel chipped in with two hits and an RBI for Yale (2-11-1).

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-1 lead midway through the fifth and then held off a Quinnipiac rally. Yale also tied a season high with 11 hits and beat the Bobcats for the first time since 2011.

The Bulldogs used seven different pitchers on Wednesday. Freshman Griffin Dey earned his first-career win, tossing one scoreless inning and striking out two. Mason Kukowski picked up the save. He did not allow a hit over 2 2/3 innings.

"Mason shut them down at a time when we really needed a win," Stuper said. "Great job by him."

Yale will look to keep the momentum going this weekend against Bucknell. The Bison will host the Bulldogs for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon on both days.
