Box Score 2 Herrera Blasts Grand Slam in 10-0 Bulldogs Win
Lewisburg, Pennsylvania – Sunday marked another example of why Yale baseball appears to have a bright future.
This time it was freshman righthander Scott Politz. He tossed a gem, allowing just one hit and striking out seven over seven innings in a 10-0 win against Bucknell Sunday at Depew Field.
The Bulldogs (4-13-1) fell 5-0 to the Bison in the second game of the doubleheader.
"There were two games that were very similar," Yale head coach John Stuper said. "Both were dominated by pitching. Scott Politz was absolutely tremendous in our win. We played great defense and swung the bat."
Politz improved to 2-2 with the win. He walked just one and Sam Clark's single in the fifth was the lone hit for Bucknell.
Yale's lineup gave Politz more than enough support.
The Bulldogs offense erupted for nine runs in the sixth, highlighted by Andrew Herrera's grand slam home run to left field. It was his second homer of the season. Alec Hoeschel also added a two-run single in the inning.
Benny Wanger went 3-for-3, Richard Slenker had his third straight multi-hit game and Simon Whiteman recorded a stolen base in his fifth straight game.
In the second game, Whiteman, Tim DeGraw and Tom O'Neill were the only Bulldogs to produce hits against Bucknell pitcher Jack Grabek.
"We simply couldn't get anything going against a very good left-handed pitcher," Stuper said.
Next up, Yale will travel to play at Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and follow at Hartford at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
