Bulldogs Lead Red Rolfe Division

West Haven - Sophomore Drew Scott was exceptional in relief, as Yale battled back before falling 5-2 to Harvard Sunday at Yale Field.

The right-hander tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts in the loss to the Crimson.

Yale also fell 9-1 to its rival in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday.

"He pitched the way I know he's capable of pitching," head coach John Stuper said. "He has that kind of ability. He throws the ball across the plate, that's the kind of ability he has."

Despite the losses, Yale (12-22-1, 7-5 Ivy) remains in first place in the Ivy League's Red Rolfe Division.

Trailing 5-0, Tim DeGraw and Alec Hoeschel knocked back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Bulldogs deficit in the fourth.  Scott kept Yale within striking distance, but the Bulldogs could not push across any more runs.

Richard Slenker added two hits, including a double. Brent Lawson also recorded a hit.

In the first game, Harvard broke it open with a four-run fourth frame. Yale erased the shutout in the seventh when Andrew Herrera plated Lawson with a single. Herrera led the offense with two hits. Benny Wanger, Lawson and DeGraw each chipped in with a hit.

Yale split with Harvard on Saturday.

"They outplayed us in every phase of the game," Stuper said. "They deserve to take three out of four. You just have to tip your hat to them. We have to get ready for Wesleyan and then go to Hanover."

Yale will play Wesleyan at Yale Field on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., a rivalry that was rekindled last season to celebrate the 150th year of existence for both programs. Yale won 7-3.

The Bulldogs will return to Ivy League action next weekend with a critical four-game set against Dartmouth. The Big Green (11-20, 5-5 Ivy) split with Brown over the weekend and are second in the Red Rolfe Division behind the Bulldogs. Dartmouth will travel to Cornell for a doubleheader on Wednesday before hosting Yale next weekend.
