Adams Huge Day in Return

New York, New York - Welcome back, Nate Adams.

After missing 10 games with an injury, Nate Adams returned to the Yale lineup Saturday. And it was like he never left.

Adams polished off a sweep of Columbia with a two-run double in the top of the 10th in a 9-7 win at Satow Stadium. Highlighted by Harrison White's seven RBIs, the Bulldogs coasted to a 14-5 win over the Lions in the opener.

"I can't put into words how great it is to have Nate back in the lineup," Yale head coach John Stuper said. "He had a great day."

Adams finished the day, going 6-for-11 with two RBIs. He leads the Bulldogs with a .447 average.

Trailing 5-3 in the fifth inning of the first game, Benny Wanger plated Adams with a groundout. Then White smacked a grand slam to put Yale ahead 8-5.

The Bulldogs (6-15-1, 2-0 Ivy) built on their lead with six runs in the final inning. White drove in a pair of runs with a triple, Tim Degraw plated another with a sacrifice fly and Simon Whiteman capped the scoring with a three-run double.

"We've taken our lumps, partly because we have played so many young guys," Stuper said. "But those guys are talented and it's starting to show."

Chasen Ford (2-3), went the distance allowing five runs on nine hits and striking out seven to earn the win.

Yale led 7-4 midway through the seventh. Columbia, the three-time defending league champions, came back to tie it in the bottom of the ninth. But it was Adams who responded and ultimately gave the Bulldogs the victory.

Degraw went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs. Whiteman, Wanger and Richard Slenker all added two hits. Griffin Dey (2-0) picked up the win for Yale. He allowed two hits and a run over three innings, while adding three strikeouts.

"I told my team this is a great start," Stuper said. "But that's all it is, a start. We have to keep plugging. There's a long way to go."

Saturday's doubleheader was pushed back to 1 p.m. because of rain.

The Bulldogs will travel to play at Penn on Sunday for a doubleheader. Yale will throw freshman righthander Scott Politz in the opener and freshman lefthander Kumar Nambiar in the second game.
