Whiteman records 8th multi-hit game

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Yale freshman Scott Politz continues to establish himself as an up-and-coming pitcher in the Ivy League.

The righthander gave up three runs on four hits over six innings, but the Bulldogs fell 3-2 Sunday at Meiklejohn Stadium. Yale fell 19-3 in the second game of the twin bill.

"We made a couple mistakes in the first game that cost us a chance to win," Yale head coach John Stuper said. "Scott Politz pitched well enough for us to win."

It was another solid outing for Politz, who tossed a one-hit shutout in his last start.

Andrew Herrera and Tom O'Neill both drove in runs in the second frame of the opener to give Yale a 2-0 advantage. Penn responded back with a run in the bottom of the frame and then tacked on two more in the fourth to pull ahead.

Benny Wanger, Brent Lawson and Harrison White also added hits for Yale (6-17-1, 2-2 Ivy), who was coming off a sweep of three-time defending league champion Columbia on Saturday.

Penn jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a win in the second game.

Yale got on the board in the seventh, as O'Neill plated Tim Degraw with a double to left field. Griffin Dey scored on an error and Degraw drove in Lawson with a single in the eighth. Degraw, Simon Whiteman and Chris Moates each had two hits in the second game for the Bulldogs.

"The second game, our pitchers never gave us a chance," Stuper said. "The wind was blowing out to left field. Penn took advantage of that and we did not."

Yale plays 11 of its next 12 at home beginning with a doubleheader against Fairfield on Wednesday. First pitch at Yale Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
