West Haven - Yale received a dominant performance from a handful of pitchers on Wednesday.
Four Bulldogs combined to toss a one-hitter in a 2-1 victory over in-state rival Fairfield in the nightcap of a doubleheader at historic Yale Field.
Yale fell 2-1 in the opener of the twin-bill. Both games were scheduled for seven innings at a cold and windy Yale Field.
Drew Scott (1-1) came on in relief to earn the win in the second game, allowing no hits and striking out three over 1 1/3 innings.
"We pitched great both games," Bulldogs head coach John Stuper said. "I thought Drew Scott threw the ball the best he has all year. He lowered his arm slot just a little bit and it really worked tonight."
Chris Moates started and went three innings without giving up a hit for Yale (7-18-1, 2-2 Ivy). Tyler Duncan was also effective in relief and left fielder Tom Ruddy came up with a game-saving catch for Yale in the seventh.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Tom O'Neill doubled and later scored on Harrison White's sacrifice bunt to tie the game. Simon Whiteman reached on a single and scored the go-ahead run on an error later in the frame.
"That was a big hit by Tom O'Neill," Stuper said. "He saves us so many runs on defense because he's so good defensively. It was nice seeing him stick a big double."
Richard Slenker and Alec Hoeschel had the other two hits for the Bulldogs.
A committee of Yale pitchers threw well in the loss to the Stags. Benny Wanger, Chris Lanham, Sam Boies, Mason Kukowski and Griffin Dey combined to allow just four hits.
Slenker doubled to drive in Tim DeGraw for Yale's lone run in the opener. Slenker had three doubles on the day. Brent Lawson and Dey also produced hits in the first game.
"You're never happy just splitting, but they found a way to win the second game," Stuper said. "I'm proud of them for that."
Yale, who leads the Ivy League's Red Rolfe Division, will continue league play this weekend. The Bulldogs will host Princeton for a doubleheader on Saturday and then Cornell for a twin-bill on Sunday. Both are scheduled to start at noon and will complete a six-game homestand.
