Yale Battles No. 17 Brown to 1-1 Tie

Ellery Winkler Scored for Bulldogs

The Bulldogs celebrate a second-half goal and tied No. 17 Brown on Saturday.
Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale Women's Soccer team on Saturday made a strong case for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid with a 1-1 tie against No. 17 Brown.

The Bulldogs (11-4, 4-2 Ivy) entered the day looking to finish with their most overall victories since the 2005 team won 15 games. That year was also the last time Yale earned an NCAA Tournament bid.

"Soccer can be a frustrating sport at times, as I felt our group did enough to win today, but unfortunately it wasn't our day," Yale head coach Brendan Faherty said.  "Brown is a really good side who were very dangerous on the counter and on restarts. Congratulations to Kia [McNeill], her staff, and student-athletes on winning the Ivy League, and we wish them the best of luck in the NCAA tournament."

With the tie, Yale went 11-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the Ivy League.  The Bulldogs continued their great play at home this season and finished 6-1-1 at Reese Stadium.

Yale held a 19-8 edge in shots and led 9-6 in corner kicks.  The Bulldogs came out strong and outshot the Bears 10-4 in the first half.

"Our group has worked really hard the past 3 months to create an identity and a playing style," Faherty added. "I am so happy for our student-athletes with their ability to grow as individuals and as team, but most importantly that they were brave enough today to play our style for 110 minutes."

Brown struck first with a goal two minutes into the match as Ava Seelenfreund headed it in off a corner kick.  From there, the Bulldogs carried most of the play.

In the second half, Ellery Winkler finally broke through for Yale in the 61st minute.  Winkler took a long pass Noelle Higginson, dribbled past a defender and slid the ball past the keeper.

After the first overtime, Yale kept the pressure on the Bears.  Yale had two shots in the final OT and did not allow a shot from Brown.

Alyssa Fagel had four saves for the Bulldogs and finished the regular season with a 11-4-1 mark.

Six Yale seniors were recognized prior to kickoff. Jane Buckley, Aerial Chavarin, Alyssa Fagel, Higginson, Kirsten Lobben and Kristi Wharton have each made outstanding contributions to the women's soccer program both on and off the field over the last four years.

"It has been a very rewarding fall for our group, but none of it would have been possible without the contributions of our six seniors," Faherty said. "Each one of them excelled in their specific role, and provided great leadership on and off the field. Lastly, I want to personally thank our student-athletes for all their efforts this fall, and for the support we have received from their families, alumnae, and the Yale community."
